Purpose
The Cyber Institute’s Volunteer Code of Conduct sets forth the expectations and standards of behavior for all individuals volunteering their time and expertise with our organization. Volunteers play an essential role in helping us advance cybersecurity and emerging technology policy, education, and research. This code ensures our shared values are upheld in every engagement.
1. Professionalism & Integrity
Represent the Cyber Institute with honesty, integrity, and professionalism at all times.
Perform assigned duties responsibly and within the scope of your volunteer role.
Maintain confidentiality regarding sensitive data, research, discussions, or unpublished materials.
Avoid conflicts of interest. Disclose any potential or actual conflicts to the volunteer coordinator or supervisor.
2. Respect & Inclusion
Treat all individuals — staff, partners, stakeholders, and fellow volunteers — with dignity, courtesy, and respect.
Foster an inclusive and welcoming environment regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, or background.
Harassment, discrimination, or intimidation in any form will not be tolerated.
3. Cybersecurity & Data Responsibility
Abide by all Cyber Institute policies regarding data privacy, cybersecurity, and acceptable use of technology and systems.
Do not share passwords, access credentials, or internal documents without authorization.
Report any cybersecurity concerns, breaches, or suspicious activity immediately.
4. Communication & Collaboration
Communicate respectfully and clearly, whether in person, by email, or on collaborative platforms.
Use professional language and maintain decorum in all public-facing and internal communications, including social media.
Seek guidance when unclear about your responsibilities or expectations.
5. Intellectual Property & Attribution
Credit original authors and creators when using research, graphics, or writing not your own.
Do not reproduce, publish, or distribute Cyber Institute content without approval unless explicitly authorized.
Respect licensing and copyright laws in all work and submissions.
6. Commitment & Accountability
Meet agreed-upon deadlines and time commitments. If circumstances change, notify your supervisor as early as possible.
Attend meetings, training sessions, and events as requested and come prepared.
Be open to feedback and willing to improve your work in line with our standards.
7. Public Representation
Do not speak to media or make public statements on behalf of the Cyber Institute unless given explicit permission.
When participating in social media or public forums, clearly distinguish personal views from those of the Cyber Institute unless you are an authorized spokesperson.
Violations
Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary actions, including reassignment, removal from volunteer duties, or termination of the volunteer relationship.
Acknowledgement
All volunteers are required to review and agree to this Code of Conduct before beginning their service.
